Retail Plumbing and HVAC: A great deal or subcontracting nightmare?
September 17, 2019 • by Laura Steinhoff
You’ve probably seen deals for a new A/C or water furnace from one of those big-name hardware stores or your favorite buy-in-bulk store. Some will sell you a unit and have you sign an installation contract with them, but for a third party to do the installation. This is an example of a retail store subcontracting a service. Using a subcontractor is a good business move for them, but is it a benefit to you?
Impact on customer service.
In the case of the big retailers, the subcontractor can be picked by them, not you. Which means they don’t have to have a passion for customers or customer service. You have no choice in hiring them, and they get paid to show up, do the job, and leave.
Impact on warranty and follow-up service.
Let’s say the unit stops working a month after installation, well within warranty. Who do you contact? The retailer, who has no liability because they didn’t perform the installation. Or the subcontractor who you’ve never had direct contact with, and you didn’t purchase the equipment through? This predicament is not a fun one to be in, and often homeowners are left contacting the experts, like Dave Jones, Inc. to try to service the unit. The trouble is, that the brand or model of the unit that you purchased is unique to the retailer and it may be difficult to source parts for the repair.
When is a deal not ideal?
The surge of excitement when you see that a unit is on sale at a retailer is short-lived once you experience what comes with it. Choose an expert and you won’t be disappointed. You may be pleasantly surprised or even shocked that industry experts provide products and installations that meet or even beat those offered by large retailers with subcontracted installations and service. Our entire business revolves around customer service, training and retaining long term employees, sourcing quality products, installing them correctly, and providing quick service. We are dedicated to giving our customers the best experience possible and are easy to reach anytime.
Check reviews and ask around about subcontractors.
Although we recognize no service provider is perfect, the Dave Jones team strives to create raving fans by always providing outstanding customer service. We’re proud of our feedback and invite you to look at our reviews before you make a purchase. (Click here to see our Google reviews)
Check out the reviews of some local big-box retailers, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find anything positive having to do with their installation service. My personal experience with a retail subcontractor resulted in an overpriced, just-okay installation. Trying to get follow up service was such a hassle we ended up fixing it ourselves. If the quality is questionable on something you can see, imagine what is going on with the things you can’t see. Ask around and a lot of your friends and neighbors to see what kind of experiences they’ve had.
